We went through 6 revisions of our coffee packaging over the last 2 years trying to balance the seemingly impossible 3 key tenets of coffee packaging:
1) Visually stunning – packaging that conveys high quality, clear branding and instantly recognizable
2) Ecologically low impact- utilize plastic free, plant based materials that are biodegradable, compostable and made with as much recycled material as possible along with environmentally friendly ink and printing
3) Extremely budget tight – because we can not pass on any extra costs due to our Proportional Pricing model we must be relentless in keeping packaging costs low.
This final version we feel hits all three and knocks it out of the park.
The bag is made of 100% plastic free, plant-based materials and is 100% biodegradable including the valve and zipper. Our logo is bright and shiny and clear and contrasts beautifully with the texture of the white Kraft paper. In fact we had to fight long and hard to get the packing engineers to do what we want to get the right amount of tooth on the paper. We reversed the bag manufacturing process and flipped the paper inversely to get the inside to be the outside.
We kept waste and cost down by only using two ink colors and utilizing the white bag as both positive and negative space in the design.
The GW Smith Colorplan cards are marvelously color saturated and decay beautifully while also showcasing each farmers unique attributes. Each coffee farmer has their own color card that spans harvest years and varietals so you can easily find tour favorite farmers. We custom designed the card slot to accommodate these beautiful cards at exactly 50% depth so you can read the key information on the card and the color of the rest of the card gives you subtle hints that there is a further story to be read.
And we managed to do all this while keeping our bag costs lower than almost anyone else we have seen. Beautiful coffee, farmer equity and packaging that looks great and destroys less. that’s the goal.
