The Story of Al-Khanshali Estate
Long before specialty coffee made Yemen a household name among enthusiasts, Mokhtar Alkhanshali was sleeping on mountains, hiking three-day trails into remote growing regions, and sitting with farmers who had nearly forgotten the crop their ancestors had given to the world. Over years of careful work, Mokhtar surveyed more than 30 coffee-growing regions across Yemen, training farmers in best practices from organic fertilization and selective harvesting to modern drying techniques and moisture analysis. He organized farmers into collectives with a mandate for 50% women on their boards, and provided interest-free micro-loans to break cycles of debt. When farmers followed these protocols, they earned over 33% more for their coffee. He called it the Mokha Method.
Then civil war broke out. In March of 2015, on the eve of Mokhtar’s planned departure to the SCAA conference in Seattle, two suitcases of coffee samples in hand, Yemen’s civilian airports were bombed. Mokhtar made his way to the Port of Mokha, hired a fisherman, and crossed the Red Sea in a small fishing boat. Seven hours later, he reached the shores of Djibouti. Days later, at SCAA, his coffees earned a 90+ in blind cupping. The story of Yemen, its coffee farmers, and the extraordinary potential of Yemeni coffee was finally being heard.Al-Khanshali Estate is Mokhtar’s greatest labor of love. For the 2025 harvest, only the absolute best lots were offered. These lots were grown, harvested, and processed with painstaking care, and made available only to a select group of partners who understand the soul of what this work represents. Presta Coffee Roasters is honored to be among them.
