Providence, RI– In recognition and support of Covoya’s Cafe Delas initiative, which seeks to create equity and build capacity for women growing coffee, U.S. Women in Coffee (USWIC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Covoya Specialty Coffee. As stated in the memorandum:

“The purpose of this MOU is to outline joint activities that promote and support gender equity in coffee, including elevating the work of women producers through storytelling, educational outreach, and market engagement.”

The MOU formalized an active and collaborative relationship between Covoya and USWIC, which is a chapter of International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA). The partnership includes promoting and encouraging participation in the Cafe Delas program among women producers and coffee roasters as buyers, as well as highlighting the activities and impacts of IWCA/USWIC.

According to Brittany Amell, Sales Representative for Covoya and USWIC Board member, “We are very proud of the Cafe Delas program and we have stories to tell. USWIC can help us spread the word not only among coffee roasters, but among potential participants in coffee growing communities.”

Café Delas coffee comes from farming operations owned by women, all of whom are listed as the business proprietor in all Covoya commercial systems. All Covoya sourcing related systems for Café Delas contain gender traceability and coffee farmers are paid directly for their coffee. Café Delas coffee is sold at a 5-cent premium which is shared with the women in cash and/or equipment and training to increase quality in both the cup and in farm practices.

Café Delas does not simply search for circumstances where women are the decision makers behind a coffee. Covoya actively provides outreach and education to women involved in coffee to equip them for being decision makers and requires that women in the Café Delas program are involved in leadership and have a voice in their producing community. Originally begun in Brazil, the Café Delas program is in its fifth year and has recently expanded to include new producing regions.

As part of this enhanced relationship between Covoya and USWIC we will be providing new opportunities for connection, collaboration, and education. We want to hear from you about what types of programming you would find interesting and helpful. Please fill out the brief form HERE.
