Whoa! Today is the last day of our Build-Outs of Summer series for 2014. It’s been quite a globe-trot up to this point, offering cafes from all over the world (but especially Florida!) the opportunity to be featured on Sprudge in their early days, just before opening.
But while the title suggests otherwise, Build-Outs of Summer is not in any way hemispherically biased. We’ll stand for none of that here at Sprudge. Spring has very nearly sprung for our readers below the Equator, and today we’re squeaking in one last Fit Out of Winter before the birds start chirping and the temp gets above 20. For our final winter fit out, we turn to the gang at Rumble Coffee Roasters in west Melbourne, who’ve commandeered a great big Melbourney warehouse out of which to operate a bustling wholesale coffee business. It’s a coffee company that dares to ask: Are you ready to Rumble?
As told to Sprudge by Joe Molloy.
Can you tell us a bit about your new space?
We’ve converted two hundred and twenty square metres of empty, dusty warehouse into a lean, mean roasting facility. It’s a big, light, open space that has plenty of room to fit more roasters in. Our head roaster is already planning his next addition to the fleet.
We are a wholesale coffee supplier who are strong believers in coffee being a fresh, local product. So our door is always open for people to pop in and grab some coffee to take home. We stock a variety of home brewing equipment and grinders and love helping people get the best out of their coffee.
What’s your approach to coffee?
Australia is an espresso driven coffee market and that means lattes. We aim to roast and blend great coffees that hold up through milk and make damn delicious lattes. Our blends are the gateway drug to specialty coffee. We lure them in with lattes and then knock them out with our single origins.
A big part of what we are about is making specialty coffee more accessible to the regular coffee drinker and cafe owner. Coffee is the best part of the day for many people and we are lucky to be a part of that.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
Our 15kg Toper roaster is rearing to go. Alongside our Proaster sample roaster so we can keep on top of all the outstanding coffees available to us in Melbourne. Grinderwise we are running a Malkonig EK43 and Mazzer Robur. As long time fans we could have no other machine than a La Marzocco Linea to pull our shots through.
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
The building was handled by the crew at Fresh Renovations, joinery by the amazing team at Massey and you can blame any poor paintwork on us. All of our design work is by the talented Jessica M. Kelly and our machinery is from Xtracted Espresso Solutions.
