Indonesian coffee is having an undeniable moment right now. Even as one of major coffee producing nations in the world, the spotlight on Indonesia hasn’t shown nearly as bright as it has here in 2024. First it was announced that World of Coffee was heading to Jakarta in 2025—bringing with it the World Brewers Cup—followed shortly thereafter by Mikael Jasin’s incredible win at the World Barista Championship in Busan, South Korea. And then recently Common Grounds Coffee opened a mind-blowing and pitch-perfectly executed new concept, the Menteng Tennis Club.
And while much of this has taken place in Jakarta, on the far eastern side of the island, the coffee scene continues to amaze. This is due in part to Expat. Roasters, who started in Bali in 2016 before expanding to include locations across the country; we even featured their Surabaya cafe last year as part of the 2023 Build-Outs of Coffee. And now Expat. has opened their latest cafe in the Juanda International Airport in Sidoarjo just outside Surabaya. We speak with the folk at Expat. Roasters to learn more.

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Expat. Roasters is a leading specialty coffee roastery and cafe chain dedicated to sourcing and roasting the finest coffee beans from around the world. Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
Expat. Roasters, Indonesia’s acclaimed specialty coffee brand, proudly announces the grand opening of its fifth store located in the Lobby Drop Zone, Terminal 1A Departure of Juanda International Airport Surabaya, East Java.
The 93 m² coffee sanctuary at Juanda International Airport is designed to cater to travelers, offering premium coffee starting from 5 AM daily. This latest addition follows the successful openings of Expat. Roasters’ third and fourth stores in Graha Family, West Surabaya, and Jakarta Mori Building, Sudirman, Central Jakarta, respectively.
The Juanda International Airport store will also offer Expat. Roasters’ newly launched cold brew cans, perfect for travelers on the go. Additionally, it offers delectable croissants, mouth-watering toasties, and an array of snacks perfect for travelers to enjoy before embarking on their journey.
Expat. Roasters Juanda International Airport is located at the Lobby Drop Zone, Terminal 1A Departure Hall and operates from 5 AM to 9 PM, Monday to Sunday.
What’s your approach to coffee? Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up? How is your project considering sustainability?
Preserving the environment is our responsibility. As a coffee company, we understand the impact our industry can have on the planet. That is why we are dedicated to minimizing our ecological footprint through sustainable practices. From sourcing ethically and promoting fair trade to implementing eco-friendly packaging and waste management systems, we strive to protect and conserve the environment. Through our CSR initiatives, we also support environmental conservation projects and raise awareness about the importance of sustainable living.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
Expat. Roasters in Juanda International Airport Surabaya is already opened on July 20th, 2024.
