These are the final days of the Build-Outs of Coffee feature series on Sprudge, but in many ways we’ve saved some of this year’s most compelling builds for late September. Settle in for a glimpse at Ember & Bean Roasting Co in Hudson, Wisconsin.
The 2024 Build-Outs of Coffee is presented by Ceado and Dona. The 2024 Build-Outs of Coffee is sponsored by Pacific Barista Series, La Marzocco, Acaia, and Ghirardelli.
As told to Sprudge by Jonathan Pressley.
For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
We’re passionate about every aspect of coffee—from the art of roasting to the science of brewing, creating a latte with mouthwatering silky milk texture, and finally, the simple pleasure of sipping that perfectly crafted cup. At Ember and Bean, we invite you to join us on a journey of discovery—exploring the endless flavor notes that coffee has to offer—and of building a meaningful coffee community where each member, from those harvesting coffee cherries through to the person enjoying the cup, knows how valued they are.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
We are excited to be growing with Norhart Construction as they build modern living space. They are a like minded company that values community, sustainability, and all the people they work with. Being a part of a building with a black and white modern design, we’ve worked hard at balancing the warmth that a coffee shop needs while still being a compliment to the overall feel of the building. Ultimately our shop we be black and white with wood accents like hand made ambrosia countertops, teak hexagonal backsplash, and a Shou Sugi Ban wall to meld modern architectural design with the inviting nature of natural materials. We’ve also prepped to add solar in the near future to make this a solar powered Cafe.
What’s your approach to coffee?
People. Coffee is all about people, building relationships, learning from others, and building community. We seek out producers that are passionate about their craft like we are passionate about roasting and crafting drinks. We work to promote sustainability, our community, and the communities we have the privilege of sourcing from.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
We are excited to be installing a Kees van der Westen Spirit along with a Poursteady.
How is your project considering sustainability?
Our wood elements have been sourced sustainably, we source all our coffee from producers who value sustainability, we use recyclable cups, lids, bags, and have prepped to install solar in the future.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
End of August 2024
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
Norhart Construction, Jack Muschinske and his magic hammer got things done.
Thank you!
Thank you for the work you all do to support and build the community within the coffee world!
