As reported by Anna Brones earlier this year, a coffee bag being “compostable” doesn’t mean it’s 100% compostable. Usually, the bags are compostable once you remove this dongle over here and separate out whatever that gizmo is. But a new coffee bag from Elevate Packaging doesn’t require any compostable qualifiers; it is the first bag (that we are aware of) that is 100% compostable, valve and all.

The new metalized (read: shiny) bags from Elevate bring a new level of convenience to the eco-friendly. No longer will users have to trim away the non-compostable parts, because there are no non-compostable parts. According to Elevate’s website:

Every aspect of the bag has been tested and also certified according to ASTM D6868 and EN13432 according to Vincotte OK Compost. The bags have been engineered and tested with leading roasters cupping tests to prove that they perform on par to conventional high-barrier metalized film pouches.

This is includes the films used inside the bag to create a barrier against moisture and oxygen. And perhaps more significantly, this also includes the degassing valve, a non-biodegradable bugaboo that has kept many eco-friendly bags from being fully compostable. Until now, that is.

Elevate Packaging’s 100% compostable coffee bags are currently available in a 16oz gusseted style, but custom sizes and designs using the same components will be rolled out later in the fall of this year. For more information, visit Elevate Packaging’s website.
