You might have noticed several cafes and webshops around the world are currently out of stock of Chemex brand paper filters. Why is the Chemex filter in such low-supply and high-demand? Could it be because of Chemex’s patented bonded filters? Is it because Chemex brand filters are 20-30% heavier than other filters on the market? Is it because, according to Chemex, Chemex brand paper filters are “scientifically designed to give you the perfect cup of brewed coffee every time?”
The answer is anyone’s guess, really, but it’s probably due to the paper and PPE shortage that has befallen the world due to COVID-19. There was a brief blip at the beginning of the pandemic when coffee filters were being used as an alternative (this has been determined to be a bad idea). As the United States enters its “third wave” and Europe enters its second, we’re facing an unprecedented Chemex filter shortage and watching as price-gouging resellers are selling ~$10 boxes of filters for upwards of $60.
Running low? Don’t fall for imitations, don’t get gouged, and shop local! We scoured the internet and found a select number of retailers that are currently carrying Chemex filters at a reasonable price.
