On Thursday, June 5, Mr. Espresso welcomes Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group Executive Chef Jason Halverson for a special Chef Collab preview of his new exclusive drink: The Halva-son. Inspired by the classic Persian confection halva, The Halva-son is an iced coffee drink that balances indulgence with wholesome ingredients. Sweetened naturally with Medjool dates and honey, and infused with sesame and pistachio, the drink is topped with velvety foam and a dusting of pistachio—offering a rich, creamy nod to the Middle Eastern treat while keeping refined sugars at bay. Not to mention it’s the perfect cool down for a walk in The Town.
Halverson is honored to bring this collaboration and playful recipe making to Oakland, where Mr. Espresso has been a longtime coffee partner for several of Hi Neighbor’s restaurants.
About Chef Jason Halverson
Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Jason Halverson grew up immersed in vibrant family gatherings that blended his Vietnamese-American heritage with comforting Midwest flavors. After moving to San Francisco in 2006 to attend culinary school, Halverson trained under some of the Bay Area’s most respected chefs, including Roland Passot at La Folie and Ron Siegel at MICHAEL MINA.
He went on to co-found Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group, known for hits like Stones Throw, Trestle (a six-time Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient), The Vault Steakhouse, MAMA Oakland, and The Madrigal. Halverson’s signature style centers on simply prepared, California-centric cuisine served with warmth, value, and a sense of occasion. He was named Eater SF’s Best Chef in 2015 and, alongside his Hi Neighbor partners, San Francisco Magazine’s and GGRA’s Restaurateurs of the Year in 2017.
