Someone Who Loves Coffee Should Buy David Lynch’s Espresso Machine

At the beginning of the year, David Lynch, a singular voice in television and film, passed away at the age of 78. Over his four decades writing and directing Lynch brought outsider art to the mainstream and was known as much for being a weirdo as he was for the complete sincerity with which he engaged with his more bizarre ideas. And as we eulogized shortly after his passing, Lynch was a coffee fanatic.

Coffee was a frequent co-star in his oeuvre. From the “damn fine coffee” of Twin Peaks to the espresso perfectionism in Mulholland Drive, coffee was more than just a prop, it was a part of the story. And now, you can take home some of this iconic part of Lynchian lore. The estate of David Lynch is auctioning off many of his effects, which includes his personal coffee equipment.

The auction is being conducted by Julien’s, a California-based auction house focusing on television, music, and film memorabilia. Taking place June 18th in Los Angeles, the auction includes unfinished scripts, cameras and filming equipment, musical instruments, memorabilia from his various films and television shows, and of course, his coffee gear.

You can, for instance, bid on “Twin Peaks related coffee mugs,” including a truly astonishing Log Lady ceramic. Or maybe you want to hold the record for most money ever spent on a Mr. Coffee coffeemaker, sitting currently at $800.

But the real stars of the auction, as least for the coffee-inclined, are David Lynch’s espresso machine and grinder. This includes his personal La Marzocco GS/3, which according to the auction was “used by Lynch on a daily basis as he truly loved his coffee!” It is accompanied in a separate auction by his Mazzer Mini espresso grinder. And perhaps the most bizarre part of the auction is that both of these items are not just relatively cheap considering their provenance but objectively so. The bids on the GS/3 and Mazzer Mini currently sit at $2,750 and $1,000, respectively.

The fact that a Log Lady mug is currently $700 but a home espresso machine is less than four times that is itself beyond bizarre, dare I say, Lynchian.

Will owning David Lynch’s espresso machine or grinder make you a better, more interesting writer? It is unclear, but I can tell you that I personally would pay $3,000 to have penned even one line as good as “fix your hearts or die.” Getting the dream home espresso machine to boot is just house money.
