PTS COFFEE TOPEKA 16

We’re highlighting work from a longtime leader in coffee quality in the United States: PT’s Coffee of Topeka, Kansas. Our friends & partner at PT’s have been in business since 1993 (!), and began roasting just a few years later in 1997. Today they offer a range of specialty coffee from around the world, much of it sourced in adherence to the “Direct Trade” sourcing model, which allows them to develop annual coffee buying relationships with top coffee producers.

One such producer is Wilford Lamastus, of the renowned Elida Estate in Boquete, Panama. This is home to some of the best coffee in the world, which is why you see coffees from Elida Estate being roasted and served up a select group of top roasters. It’s also why Wilford Lamastus was nominated for a 2015 Sprudgie award for Notable Producer. That makes this coffee a complete example of beauty: the PT’s Elida Estate run is a gorgeous coffee, presented in lovely packaging designed by the brand’s own in-house team.

As told to Sprudge by Kimber Mitchell.

When did the coffee package design debut?

It debuted September 8th.

Who designed the package? (In-house? Design firm?)

Our in-house graphic artist Kimber Mitchell designed this packaging. The boxes were printed through All Packaging Co. (Kansas City, MO), Bags were from Pack Plus, and the labels were printed with Capital Label (Topeka, KS).

Any design highlights you want to share (pantone #, typeface details)

The smaller boxes were inspired by coffee trees, the design shows a hand rendering of a coffee tree branch. The label colors were meant to give you a feel for earth tone colors to pair nicely with the craft box colors.

Please describe the look in your own words!

The look of the boxes give the viewer an organic feel to the packaging, with clear bags to in the interior of the boxes to showcase the coffee we received from our coffee parters. The customer is given three different process methods from Elida Estate. We wanted to give the customer an experience to learn what process that they favor the most for themselves.

What coffee information do you share on the package? What’s the motivation behind that?

We wanted to create a box that came in small amounts, 5.5 ounces each. Enough to try it and share it more than once, each bag of coffee yields two Chemex pour overs.

Where is the bag manufactured?

The bag was manufactured through Pack Plus. Which I have to point out our area representative, Charlene, is fantastic in helping our company in every way possible.

For package nerds, what *type of package* is it? (hand pressed, one-way valve, what’s it lined with, etc)

The exterior box is printed black of craft. The interior boxes are done on a press with a glossy black ink finish. The bag is a clear poly gusseted bag with a one way valve.

Is the package recyclable? Any other pro-environment info about the package you want to share?

The packaging of this box is recyclable, excluding the one way valve on the bag.
