OAKLAND, Calif. — June 18, 2026 – Mr. Espresso has officially announced the launch of its very first co-fermented coffee: the Sumatra CSC Alamin Bener Meriah Jasmine Co-Ferment. This hyper-limited micro-lot represents a bold, experimental milestone for the multi-generational brand, pairing cutting-edge agricultural processing with its signature oakwood-roasting heritage. Sourced from the Bener Meriah estate in Sumatra’s famous Aceh Province, this single-variety lot is composed entirely of Typica beans. The estate is operated by Central Sumatera Coffee, a group of young coffee professionals founded in 2015 who are dedicated to elevating the quality and flavor expectations of Sumatran coffee.

“There’s been a lot of buzz around co-ferments, and we’ve been curious about it ourselves,” says John Di Ruocco, VP of Coffee at Mr. Espresso. “A lot of the co-ferments I’ve seen are made with Colombian coffee, which already has a fruit-forward flavor. This combination sounded intriguing because you get some of the varietal character from the Sumatra, combined with a lovely, jasmine floral flavor as well. Sumatra tends to be a little more savory and less fruit-forward, making this a truly unique combination. Plus, unlike some other co-ferments, this doesn’t hit you over the head with the flavor you’re infusing.”
AN EXPERIMENTAL PROCESS MEETS OAK WOOD ROASTINGTo create this unique profile, the freshly picked cherries are first held in nylon bags for 16 hours to soften the fruit and boost internal sugar levels. After being depulped, the coffee is moved into fermentation tanks where yeast and powdered dried jasmine flowers are introduced to kickstart the co-fermentation process. Once the cycle is complete, the coffee is air-dried to 35% moisture, wet-hulled, and dried to a final moisture content of 11–12% before being hand-sorted and bagged for export.
The resulting profile is luxuriously creamy and hyper-floral, offering complex tasting notes of jasmine, lychee, papaya, mint, mango, cantaloupe, and rosewater. By finishing the green beans in their traditional oakwood roastery, Mr. Espresso balances the intense botanical notes of the anaerobic jasmine fermentation with a smooth, perfectly rounded cup structure that highlights the true craft of the origin.
The Sumatra CSC Alamin Bener Meriah Jasmine Co-Ferment is available as a limited release in 8 oz bags. It can be purchased online at mrespresso.com.
ABOUT MR. ESPRESSOMr. Espresso is an Oakland-based, family-owned specialty coffee roasting company that has stayed true to its Italian roots while embracing innovation to inspire the next generation of coffee drinkers. Founded in 1978 by Carlo Di Ruocco, it is one of the only coffee companies in the U.S. to roast its coffee exclusively over wood, a traditional Italian roasting technique that Carlo brought to the Bay Area from his hometown of Salerno. This meticulous production method results in a complex and full-bodied coffee with less acidity – the hallmarks of a classic Italian espresso.
A West Coast coffee pioneer, Mr. Espresso was one of the first coffee providers to also offer a dynamic selection of premium, Italian-made espresso equipment such as Faema, La Marzocco and Rocket, and cutting-edge American-made brands like Slayer, for professional and home use. The company continues to provide all-encompassing, one-stop coffee service, including exceptional beans, industry-leading brewing equipment, and expert service and training support. It is a respected Bay Area institution that serves a sizable share of top restaurants, coffeehouses, and hotels in California and beyond. In 2023, Mr. Espresso opened its first branded retail cafe, The Caffè by Mr. Espresso, in downtown Oakland, not far from the roastery.
Today, Mr. Espresso is guided by Carlo’s wife, Marie, and their three adult children, Laura, John, and Luigi, all working together in the Oakland showroom and roasting facility to ensure that Carlo’s legacy for service and time-honored tradition meets the emerging trends of the marketplace.
