With the dissemination of first doses of the coronavirus vaccine, there’s a glimmer of hope, a faint pinhole light off in the distance, that life maybe at some point be returning to pre-2020 normalcy. It’s not close, but it’s there, cresting over the horizon. And so while we are still indoors weathering the worst of the second wave, you may as well take this opportunity and up those barista skills before getting to put them to good use. Luckily, the Global Coffee Festival has created a brand-new world-class curriculum. Introducing the Global Coffee School, an online training resource for coffee education, and the first classes start in February.
Leaning on the expertise of the coffee professionals and institutions that have made the London Coffee Festival one of the premiere coffee events on the calendar each year, the Global Coffee School will feature five different courses with the first, Foundation Course: The Fundamentals, beginning early next year. This eight-week program will serve as the base level from which the remaining courses will grow. Along with a roster of as-yet-unnamed expert teachers, the Foundations course was designed with the at-home barista in mind and includes weekly practice assignments, practical and theory tests, and “graduate progression paths,” all of which can be accessed online via your phone, computer or other streaming media device.
With the basics down, students can sign up for any of the four advanced training courses: Sensory, Espresso & Latte Art, Drink Design & Mixology, and Vegan Coffee Craft. Each of the advanced courses last four weeks and allow for a deeper dive into a given topic, all led by “world-renowned experts.”
Currently, the Global Coffee School is accepting pre-enrollments for the Fundamentals course. Regularly priced at £80 ($106 USD), the GCS is offering a holiday special for only £64 ($85 USD). Advanced classes are slated to cost £40 ($53 USD).
