We are big fans of the new packaging design from our friends at Heartwood Coffee Roasters in northeast Ohio. The company teamed up with a local graphic design agency to create a brand identity and package that could really stand out and match Heartwood’s vision.
We spoke with owner James Sanders to learn more.
What was the inspiration behind this design?
We loved the idea of a modern magazine type of vibe that could use colors and labels to differentiate between all our offerings. It was also important to have a recyclable bag that also protected the coffee and was easy for customers to use.
Who designed it?
Secret Creative in Akron, Ohio did the design work! They are true professionals and great friends doing work for some of the biggest companies in Cleveland, Akron, and the US.
From first vision to final product, how long did the design process take?
The design took about 10 months from conception to product in hand.
Tell us about some of your favorite design details.
I love the three different color bags with the bold HEARTWOOD COFFEE ROASTERS on the front of each.
How does the package design reflect the company’s overall branding and messaging?
We want to be an approachable local brand that delivers at the level of a large corporation. We don’t want customers to compromise on quality or service just because we are a small local company. The design of the bags also helps our baristas point a customer to the type of coffee they like and makes it easy for them to find it again next time.
Are there key elements of the packaging meant to educate the consumer?
We have more information on these bags than we ever have had before. After our first origin trip to Colombia, it became extremely important to us to credit the farmer, the processing, and the importer on each bag. Processing and taste notes are included to help the customer make a good choice.
Are any of the packaging materials recyclable or compostable?
All materials are industrial recyclable, and we collect bags in house and send them to be properly recycled.
Where is it available to purchase?
Any of our three cafes in Hudson, Chagrin Falls, or Orange, OH or online.
