You love coffee. You love bars. And now it’s time to put your hands together for Big Island Coffee Roasters, a Hawaii-based brand that’s making waves with a line of edible coffee bars. These award-winning bars look and feel like a traditional chocolate bar, and made quite the impression on a recent episode of Good Morning America. We love the fact that it’s something you can eat on its own or melt down in hot water or milk to make a quick espresso-adjacent beverage.
These bars are both getting buzz and giving buzz—The “Latte” coffee bar contains the equivalent of two shots of espresso while the “Hawai’i Sea Salt” and “Classic Espresso Bites” bars contain the equivalent of three shots of espresso.
We were especially impressed with the product’s design. With bold colors and a vintage look, these bars are wrapped in a gorgeous package that fit right in to the fine chocolate bars scene. I just can’t get enough! And so we reached out to Big Island Coffee Roasters Co-Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Kelleigh Stewart to learn more about the design process.

Who designed the packaging?
We worked with Farm Design founder Aaron Atchison.
How long did the design process take?
Around three months.
What were some of the goals for the new look?
To illustrate the personality of this brand extension (charming, friendly, energetic and bold) while also ensuring customers recognize that a bar of coffee – not chocolate – and it’s the same brand as our Hawai’i-grown coffee products.
Tell us about some of the details in the design.
The packaging is adorned with Kilauea volcano and Ōhiʻa Lehua blossoms. Ōhiʻa are an immensely important keystone species that holds the entire volcano-to-forest ecosystem together -it’s the first tree to colonize lava. One can picture the boar roaming in the Ōhiʻa forests of Kilauea volcano.
Each package is a different color with a different purpose: Classic is blue—it’s the primary color of our brand. Salted is the color of the red salt and landscape of Molokai, an ingredient of this bar. Latte is a creamy off-white and contains organic milk.
We wanted the design to maintain the same historic nostalgia and elegance of our coffee brand, but visually communicated as being more bold and friendly. The art work that Aaron and his team delivered a deign that leans towards the nostalgia of art deco and western artwork.
