The movement around Indonesian coffee culture in America continues to grow apace, with a stunning new entry opening its doors in the heart of Silicon Valley. This is Hijau Coffee in San Jose, California.
The 2026 Build-outs of Coffee is presented by DONA, Pacific Barista Series, and La Marzocco.
As told to Sprudge by Lisa Maria.
For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
We are Silicon Valley’s first Indonesian coffee shop. We serve Indonesian-origin beans and Indonesian-inspired flavors in our drink menu, such as the popular pandan latte. We started out as a coffee pop-up at farmers market and grew with the support of the community.
Hijau was born out of a shared passion to bring the vibrant, rich culinary heritage of Indonesia to the Bay Area specialty coffee scene. The inspiration behind Hijau traces back to West Java, Indonesia, where founder Lisa grew up in a home filled with the aromas of coffee roasting, raised by parents who ran their own small coffee business.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
We took over a former Starbucks location at a busy intersection in the Midtown neighborhood of San Jose. The space is bright, open, and airy. Many customers have mentioned that the space feels welcoming and cozy. We want the space to act as a cultural encounter and a bridge between the Bay Area and Indonesia. We imported most of the space’s furnishings such as tables, chairs, shelving, wall decors, custom “batik tiles” as well as handmade ceramics.
What’s your approach to coffee?
A way to connect to our own heritage and family roots and to introduce them to the world. We welcome everyone in their different stages of coffee journey and win by providing hospitality, craft, and consistency in what we do.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
La Marzocco Strada three-group with custom green color. Indonesian-origin beans (currently serving Sumatra Takengon and Bali Kintamani).
How is your project considering sustainability?
We offer “for here” cups and reusable water cups. We upcycled “batik” stamps for wall decors.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
Grand opening was on Saturday Sep 5!
Thank you!
