Tweed Coffee (@TweedCoffee) is the brand new roasting arm of Houndstooth Coffee in Austin, Texas, whom we humbly consider to be one of the best multiroaster cafes in the United States. Houndstooth was featured in our coverage of the La Marzocco Texas Road Show back in 2012, and today it’s a delight to update that coverage with a look at their new roasting brand.
With bold colors offset by a stark white background, in hues like periwinkle, Tarheel blue and mustard, these Tweed Coffee bags certainly are striking. The coffees inside them are none too shabby as well: El Salvador Finca Miravalle, sourced by Cafe Imports; Honduras Finca Mogola, sourced by Mercanta; and an ECX “Top Lot” from Ethiopia, sourced by Keffa and dubbed “YirgZ” (for “zero defect”). All three of these coffees were roasted by Jonathan Aldrich, whom Sprudge readers in the United States may remember as your 2013 South Central Brewers Cup Champion.
Success in specialty coffee competitions can be a portent of good things to come. Today Mr. Aldrich is the green buyer, profile and production roaster for Tweed, overseeing its operations alongside Houndstooth owner Sean Henry. Though the cafes (just two for now) are in Austin, Tweed is roasted in Aldrich’s native city of Dallas. Plans are in the works for a Houndstooth multiroaster concept in Dallas in the coming months, with a Tweed Coffee retail/roastworks and training lab to follow, according to Mr. Aldrich.
Right now you can find Tweed at Houndstooth Coffee in Austin, alongside offerings from Counter Culture Coffee, Madcap Coffee Company, Coava Coffee Roasters, PT’s Coffee and Cuvee Coffee. Select wholesale is available as well, at Local Coffee in San Antonio, restaurants like Texas French Bread and Olamaie in Austin, Brewed in Fort Worth, and the pop-up incarnation of Dichotomy Coffee & Spirits in Waco, Texas, whose forthcoming permanent cafe was recently profiled in our Build-Outs of Summer series.
