When Portland Coffee Roasters found out Oregon Public Broadcasting was losing federal funding, they knew they wanted to help. Working directly with OPB, Portland Coffee Roasters developed OPBeans, a new blend of coffees produced by women based in Honduras. Proceeds will help support Oregon public media and showcase beautiful illustrated Oregon landscapes on the packaging.
The illustrations are by Portland Coffee Roaster’s Taylor Engel and the packaging design was done in-house by the company’s design team. Engel drew from personal inspiration for the landscapes. “It’s great to be able to draw on my own travel experiences as a lifelong Oregonian to illustrate this bag,” says Engel, “I have fond memories of listening to OPB on long card rides, when traveling, or just running errands around town so bringing these two experiences together has been such a special project in my career.”
The bag features Mount Hood, Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Crater Lake, and Smith Rock State Park.

Tell us more about the inspiration behind this design.
We wanted the design to reflect Oregon as a whole, to better express how OPB is a news source for all of Oregon. In an initial meeting, the phrase “from the desert to the coast” was an inspiration for the design of the bag. By dedicating each panel of the bag to an iconic piece of Oregon’s landscape, we think we’ve brought that inspiration to life.
From first vision to final product, how long did the design process take?
We first reached out to OPB right after the federal funding end announcement. Starting in October 2025 we worked together to come up with plans and ideas of how we could be of help. Once we landed on a collaborative coffee blend as the method, we then began brainstorming what design elements would best reflect this collaboration, finally launching OPBeans in May 2026.
Are there key elements of the packaging meant to educate the consumer?
OPBeans coffee is unique in that is produced by women in Honduras. We’re proud to showcase the coffee from the COMPIPRONIL and CAUFUL cooperatives from over 400 women farmers. This fact is highlighted on the side panel of the packaging. Brewing tips are included on the other side panel of the bag, and tasting notes are included on the front.
OPBeans is available to purchase on Portland Coffee Roasters website, at their cafe locations, and Portland-area New Seasons and Fred Meyer stores.
The Coffee Design feature series in 2026 is presented in partnership with noissue.
