Consider the coffee photo. Once the telescoped realm of the professional, cordoned off behind layers of access and equipment, the images we saw of coffee—its preparation, its production, its cultivation, its enjoyment—were tightly controlled by those with the means and proximity to capture coffee in all its beauty. Then, a revolution, as cell phone cameras democratized the means of production around the coffee image, giving anyone with a data plan and an idea the ability to not just photograph coffee, but disseminate those photographs via online sharing platforms, from the early days of Flickr straight through to today’s free-for-all hogpile of meta-Meta sharing.

There’s never been more coffee photography, never been better coffee photography, and the medium has never been more important, more immediate, and more worthy of deeper consideration. That’s why for the first time ever this year, we’ve created an awards platform that includes coffee photography as an indelible part of the wider narrative around coffee as an aesthetic movement, fusing art and design and coffee together with meaningful results.
