Have you ever wanted to nerd out on coffee minutiae while also feeling like maybe you should get the business for wanting to do something so silly? Like, on one hand, coffee is this infinitely complex thing that no matter how hard you try you’ll never fully grasp. And on the other hand, it’s just coffee and sometimes it doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that. Luckily, for those of two minds there’s the latest installation of Are You Smarter Than A Comedian. Billed as “Seattle’s first-ever night class/comedy-game show,” it combines a panel discussion led by experts in that field, who are also getting absolutely roasted by comedians the entire time.
And the next installation is all about coffee, which they are calling, appropriately enough, The Roast Lab.
Taking place Thursday, September 25th at the Here After, a 100-seat comedy club in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood, The Roast Lab is going to dive deep on some of the buzziest questions in coffee pop culture today, and pay dearly for it. Fielding the questions will be Danli Luo, a PhD student finding new uses for coffee grounds, along with Frank Song, a psychology researcher studying the effects of caffeine and alcohol on sleep.
Among the sort of topics to be discussed are: What does an espresso martini do to your sleep schedule? Could coffee grounds and mushrooms replace plastics? What’s the science behind your 2pm crash? And while the expert panel are answering these questions, they’ll be sharing a stage with a comedian, who will be giving them—and members of the audience—a whole bunch of grief for it.
