Last year the song of the summer was unquestionably Espresso, the smash hit by pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter. But now it’s 2025 and there is an espresso-shaped hole in our radio dials or Spotify playlists or however it is that bop out these days that needs to be filled. And though we are still have a months away from the hotter months taking full effect, one song has emerged as the heir apparent to Carpenter’s throne. Please enjoy Espresso Macchiato by Estonian rapper and visual artist Tommy Cash.
Now, if you’re an American you may be thinking to yourself, “wow must be a slow news days if Sprudge is writing about some weird song on YouTube.” And you would of course be absolutely incorrect. Over the weekend, Cash and Espresso Macchiato won Eesti Laul, the annual music competition put on by Estonian public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhääling that decides the performer who will go on to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest.
We Americans don’t entirely understand Eurovision. We know it as the European music contest with over the top outfits, but we don’t really get the magnitude of it all. Hundreds of millions of people tune in each year across Europe; it’s one of the most watched non-sporting events in the entire world. Swedish pop group Abba famously got their big break after winning Eurovision. All of this to say, it’s a big deal.
And now Tommy Cash is bringing Espresso Macchiato to the world in hopes of securing Estonia’s second Eurovision win, its first since 2001. Given the subject matter, Cash has a pretty strong chance of making it through the Semi-Finals at least, which are decided by viewer vote. I mean, how can any self-respecting Italian, Australian, or Scandinavian person not throw their support behind a song called Espresso Macchiato? (For what it’s worth, the Italians have come out in full force to express their appreciation for the song in the comments section of the YouTube video.)
To address the two-ounce elephant in the room, though, no I have no idea what it is that Tommy Cash is drinking in the video but it is not a macchiato. We can safely assume that it is espresso in that to-go cup of his, but adding a splash of cold milk does not a macchiato make. I wouldn’t add any sugar either but that’s less canonical. I’m not entirely sure what you would call that drink honestly. An iced latte hold the ice? A Starbucks brand Starbucks cortado? Esplasho?
Whatever it is, I’m willing to forgo the picking of nits in order to dogmatically support Tommy Cash in his quest to win Eurovision. Mi amore, mi amore, espresso macchiato macchiato macchiato, por favore.
