If there are two descriptors I most associate with espresso martinis, they are precision and speed. In that the espresso martini is precisely the cocktail I never want to drink ever, and if I were forced to, presumably to escape some Saw-like situation, I’d down it as speedily as possible. I kid of course; people love these fuggin’ things. So much so that there is an entire bartending competition built around them, where speed and precision are the name of the game. It’s called the Good Clean Fun Competition, and local events are taking place across the country.

Hosted by Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, an international non-profit organization seeking to educate and empower members of the hospitality industry through events and competitions, Good Clean Fun is a back-to-basics style competition. No throwing bottles all willy nilly or flare or trying to figure out how to incorporate durian into a beverage. It’s about good old-fashioned bartending.

It’s a timed event and the rules are pretty simple. Competitors, wearing a provided crisp white, stain-free t-shirts, are to make four Dry Espresso Martinis consisting of 2oz Absolut Vodka, 1oz Kahlua, and 1oz espresso, that must then be shaken vigorously over ice in a cocktail shaker, strained into a chilled coupe glass, and then garnished with exactly three espresso beans. Whoever does this the fastest—and the cleanest—wins.

The local round kicked off in January, and a total of 35 competitions are set to take place throughout the end of February. The top 10 from each event will go on to compete in Regional Competition, either East or West, location depending. In the each of Regional rounds, the top three will win “an all-expenses paid trip to the Absolut Akademi experience in Åhus, Sweden. And the fourth-place finishers from each region will win a trip to the 23rd annual Tales of the Cocktail conference taking place in New Orleans at the end of July. Not too shabby just for keeping a tidy work station.

So if you think you’ve got what it takes to whip up a few tidy ‘tinis, check the Good Clean Fun Competition’s official website for a list of local events you can sign up for. Or maybe you could spend that time learning an actually good coffee or coffee-adjacent cocktail. How about a cascara or a chartreuse cappuccino? Both vastly superior to the espresso martini and both, as luck would have it, in the latest book from your friends at Sprudge, But First, Coffee: A Guide To Brewing From The Kitchen To The Bar. Just sayin’.
