For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Since roasting its first coffee beans in 1999, Stumptown Coffee has been uncompromising in its pursuit of creating the highest quality coffee from source all the way to cup. Through its industry-leading Direct Trade sourcing model established in 2002, Stumptown is steadfast in its dedication to collaborative and long-term relationships with small-scale producer partners across the world. A Certified BCorp since 2018, Stumptown Coffee cafes can be found in Portland, New York, Los Angeles, and Kyoto and is known for being one of the first brands to bring cold brew coffee to the masses. Stumptown Coffee’s full line of high quality whole bean and Cold Brew coffees are available in cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores nationwide as well as online.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
The new Lincoln Heights venue, situated inside the historic Starland Theatre building on the corner of North Broadway and Workman, marks Stumptown’s official return to Los Angeles proper, bringing its signature retail cafe experience and regional training space under one roof as a neighborhood anchor. Since opening its first cafe in Portland in 1999, Stumptown has built spaces designed to reflect and honor the communities they call home. The new cafe continues this philosophy, anchoring a walkable pedestrian corridor while preserving the character of one of LA’s oldest neighborhoods through adaptive reuse.
What’s your approach to coffee?
In 2003, Stumptown pioneered the Direct Trade sourcing model, beginning with a partnership with the Aguirre family of Finca El Injerto in Guatemala that continues today. Stumptown works with dozens of producer partners across four continents, and in 2024, over 90% of all coffee purchased came through Direct Trade relationships of three or more consecutive years, with 100% of purchases independently verified by Enveritas across 30 sustainability criteria.

How is your project considering sustainability?
Key restoration highlights include the preservation of the historic theater façade and original terrazzo flooring, creating a welcoming gathering space rooted in local architectural heritage. Additionally, the stools in the atrium are made from fallen trees collected around LA.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
Our Grand Opening was on Saturday, 8/29!
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
To bring this cafe to life, we partnered with the dynamic design team at Klein Agency. Klein designed the buildout, and fabricated the custom benches in the atrium as well as the speakers in the cafe.
