There’s so much high-quality coffee content readily available for anyone willing to seek it out. No longer is coffee media the arena of established brands; regular folks the world over have been empowered to create their own coffee media thanks to social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube. It’s one of the reasons that this year we expanded the Sprudge Design Awards to include the Best Coffee Photograph of the Year, honoring the visual storytellers in the coffee space, professionals and amateurs alike.

Most of the modern coffee media today is short-form, from sub-one-minute Instagram stories and TikToks to 10-minute YouTube videos. But sometimes coffee needs a bit more time than a social media post offers in order to tell a fuller story. Sometimes there needs to be a documentary. And that’s exactly what Accademia del Caffè Espresso has to offer. La Marzocco’s cultural hub has announced the release of The Rise of Espresso, a new documentary feature film that will be released as part of the Italian Film Festival in Melbourne.

Per the press release, The Rise of Espresso documents “Italian emigrants who, throughout the years, have promoted espresso coffee culture all over the world.” The near-hourlong film, produced entirely in-house by the Accademia and directed by Enrico Ventrice, will tell the story of espresso “from an Italian tradition to a global cultural phenomenon” through the “challenges and anecdotes from the many emigrants who have dedicated their lives to the beverage.”

The premiere of The Rise of Espresso takes place today, September 24th at Melbourne’s Italian Film Festival and will be screened at Palace Cinemas on Norton Street and Penny Lane. It will then be shown in Syndey on October 1st, International Coffee Day.

The film is part of a larger project by the Accademia documenting the history and importance Italian migrants have had on the spread of espresso worldwide. The initial part of the project, titled “Coffee Migrant | Migrant Coffee – BRAZIL Chapter II,” that portrays the migration of millions of Italians to Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries is currently on exhibit in Florence. And the next installation, Coffee Migrant | Migrant Coffee – NEW WORLDS Chapter II,” will be released next year.
