Being a coffee lover in the digital age means constantly worrying about getting coffee on your electronic devices. But what these new cases presuppose is: what if it isn’t so much of a bad thing? The Movas E Coffee Collection by Moft are protective carriers for your electronics and they’re made of upcycled coffee grounds.
Used coffee grounds have become a favorite material for eco-alternatives to all sorts of products. From the litany of things that can be made with coffee-produced biochar to batteries and stronger concrete and car parts and clothes even. And it is in the similar vein as the latter that this new use comes.
Per Yanko Design, the line of accessories are made of a “bio-based leather” that combines coffee grounds with a “waterborne bio-based polyurethane” to create a leather alternative. It is a completely new material aimed to replace conventional leather as well as other synthetic alternatives.
The bio-leather features a finely pebbled texture inspired by the feel of coffee grounds as well as “embedded aroma microcapsules [that] release a subtle roasted coffee scent,” according to Moft.
For the initial run, the coffee bio-leather is being used to create a laptop carry sleeve and a cellphone tripod stand. The sleeve is compatible with most 14” and smaller laptops that doubles as an adjustable-height stand. The stand works with all MagSafe phones, including iPhone and Android models, and can be adapted to non-MagSafe phones and silicon cases using the metal ring included with it.
Available for purchase via the Moft website, the carry sleeve and phone tripod retail for $74.95 and $39.99, respectively.
There is but one question remaining. If a customer sets up their mobile office inside a coffee shop, where they camp for a full eight hours and only buy a cup of coffee but they’re using accessories made from upcycled coffee, does that make it better or worse? It’s worse, right? I can’t put my finger on why, but it feels worse.
