Coming in at the 11th hour as a dark horse candidate for best coffee news of the year: dogs that look like tigers. That’s right, it’s a dog, but it’s been made to look like a tiger. And why was this dog given racing stripes (other than to look pretty sharp, of course)? Apparently to scare away monkeys.
As reported by the Hindustan Times, Srikanth Gowda, a coffee and areca farmer in India’s Thirthahalli district was having monkey troubles. They were destroying his crops. Originally, Gowda was using soft toy tigers to scare off the thieves, but over time, the colors of the toys would fade and the monkeys would be back up to their old tricks. That is when he got the idea to give his dog Bulbul a makeover. And according to Gowda, it’s working.
I now take Bulbul to the fields twice a day — in the morning and evening. I have seen them running away at the sight of the dog. The monkeys now refrain from entering my plantations.
In fact, the tiger-dog is so effective that many of Gowda’s neighbors have followed suit in their fight the simian scourge.
It should be noted here that you in the urban parts of the first world have no reason whatsoever to dye your pet’s hair; it is a potentially harmful practice that could hurt the animal’s skin. It’s something you have no reason to do.
Anyway, three cheers for Bulbul, a very good boy.
