The arms race to open the first cat cafe in the Americasย just had a warhead dropped in its water dish, in the form of a Major-Cat-Food-Brand backed cat cafe pop-up coming soon to New York City.

Next Thursday, April 24, through Sunday, April 27, the Purina ONE Cat Cafe at is popping up in Manhattan at 168 Bowery. Rumor has it that service at this cat cafe will be partially (pawtially?) provided by a well-regarded speciality coffee roaster based in Brooklyn.

The Purina Cat Cafe, itself a pop-up will feature adoptable, hang-out-with-able cats from Long Island’s North Shore Animal League, alongside delicious, artisan-roasted coffees from the aforementioned undisclosed roaster. This pop-up puts New York squarely in the lead in a mad, across-the-living-room midnight dash to the finish line against other planned cat cafes in San Francisco, Oakland and Montreal.

Though New York, and indeed, the world, will thrill at this news, we at Sprudge can only react with the mixture of sadness and envy that comes from knowing that with New York’s feline success comes our own personal loss, as this event–only four shorthaired days long–takes place concurrently with the Specialty Coffee Association of America annual convention in Seattle. Will we have a photographer there nonetheless? Of course. Do we wish we could drop everything, ditch the USBC and all those fabulous parties in Seattle and just go hang out at these weird cat cafe stunt? Yes, yes we do.
