We’re longtime followers of Santa Monica’s Cafe Demitasse, who rank consistently among the best coffee shops in southern California. Demitasse began roasting a few years back, and a distinctive signature drink menu has always been part of the offering, but now they may have topped themselves once and for all with a drink so springy, so blue, we just had to feature it on an edition of On The Menu. We spoke with the team at Cafe Demitasse to learn more about the Blue Monday, a very special drink made using butterfly pea flower.
Tell us about your signature drink!
Our spring seasonal latte is the Blue Monday. We mix butterfly pea flower with your milk of choice and pour that out into a ceramic cup (if hot) or shaken into a glass snifter (if iced). Then we pull a shot of espresso into homemade rosemary-lemon syrup in a small carafe. The customer is invited to pour the espresso/syrup mix into the cup/snifter when they’re ready and then drink!

House-made lemon-rosemary syrup.
Is your signature drink served in a particular vessel? How did you make this choice?
When iced, it goes into a glass snifter so that the customer can see the espresso getting mixed in when they pour it in.
