This week in our international drink series On The Menu we’re drinking your milkshake, Paul Dano. Kind of. Los Angeles cafe (and incredible subscription service) Dayglow Coffee is celebrating the works of filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, starting with a drink inspired by the 2007 epic period drama There Will Be Blood.

We spoke to founder and CEO Tohm Ifergan to learn more.

Tell us about your signature drink!

Every year we do a new series of drinks inspired by my favorite filmmakers. This year I went with Paul Thomas Anderson since his films are very thematic character studies ranging in intensity. There Will Be Blood felt like a perfect start as it’s easily his most chilling and memorable film. For those who haven’t seen TWBB (!) it’s about a conman who moves to oil-rich California and tricks the homeowners to sell their property for a pittance. Sounds like a tasty drink, right? Well (pun intended) there is a particular scene that attempts to describe our protagonist’s intentions through a familiar analogy. Needless to say, we took it quite literally.

Who crafted your signature drink?

Tohm Ifergan.

What unique ingredients does it contain?

We infused a nonalcoholic coffee spirit with activated charcoal to give it that crude oil appearance. Then slowly freeze it with blood orange, coconut cream, monk fruit, and vanilla until it reaches an almost frosty type mouthfeel.

Is your signature drink served in a particular vessel? How did you make this choice?

A tapered lowball glass. Initially, we looked at fountain glasses to give a traditional milkshake vibe but it felt off. I liked a tapered glass because it reminded me more of an oil well.

Where is it available?

Dayglow Silverlake
3206 Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90026

How much is it?

$9

Anything else you’d like to share about the drink?

Naturally, we have to serve the drink with a ridiculously long straw as a nod to the film. It’s definitely been quite the spectacle to see people literally drink their friend’s milkshake.

Thank you!
