What a whirlwind few days it has been in Athens, Greece for the 2023 World of Coffee and the four World Coffee Championships it hosted. Over 140 coffee professionals from all around the globe descended upon the ancient city in hopes of taking the top spot in their chosen discipline. And just as you’d expect from those taking part at this level of competition, they did not disappoint.

While World of Coffee, the Specialty Coffee Association’s premier international trade show and expo, began Thursday of last week, the World Coffee Championships kicked things off a day earlier, on Wednesday, June 21st. The tone was set early with high-level performances from competitors in all four disciplines: World Barista Championship, World Brewers Cup, World Cup Tasters, and World Cezve/Ibrik Championship. But as these things go, the field grew smaller and smaller each day as the competitions progressed, from Round One to the Semi-Finals then ultimately to the Finals.

As those who were following along with the Livestream can aver, these were coffee professionals at the top of their game. And even taking into account all the wonderful signature beverages and experimental coffees they got to taste, it’s safe to say no one envied the position the judges found themselves in. Deciding between these fields at this level feels like something beyond splitting hairs.

Yet somehow they did it, and now the dust has settled on what was an exciting weekend. There’s a lot left to pore over from these four competitions, certainly some potential new trends that we’ll see working their way into lower levels of competition, but that’s for another day. Today is about celebrating all the hard work of the competitors who took the stage in Athens this week. Here are the winners of the 2023 World Coffee Championships from World of Coffee Athens.
