There ain’t no place like Birmingham

We’re loving this early look at the soon-to-open June Roasters cafe in Birmingham, Alabama. In true classic Build-Outs fashion, this project is currently under construction, making progress towards a 2021 open. Let’s learn more about this new coffee Alabama coffee destination!

As told to Sprudge by Jimmy Truong.

The 2021 season of Build-Outs is presented by Fellow. The series is sponsored by La Marzocco, Pacific Barista Series, Marco Beverage Systems, Dona, and Sustainable Harvest.

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?

Small-batch roasting company from Birmingham, Alabama with a future storefront coming later this year!

Can you tell us a bit about the new space?

We’re working with David Baker Architect, who have previously worked with Saint Frank out in San Francisco, California. The space inside is a little over 1,000 square feet with another 1,000 square feet of dedicated patio space outside. People can expect a bright, warm inviting space. The bar will be lowered to promote customer interaction, with a roll-up garage door leading out into the patio. We’ll be serving up classic espresso products as well as an entirely separate menu for signature drinks.

What’s your approach to coffee?

Just like everyone else, we work with amazing importers to roast approachable and exciting coffees but also want to create new and exciting coffee-based beverages.

Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?

A custom three-group La Mazocco Linea Classic with ACE DotShot Timers (each group head has a separate pump motor, even the steam wand has one!), Curtis brewer, and Mahlkönig E80 Supreme, e65s, and EK43s.

How is your project considering sustainability?

Working with local organizations within the city to recycle plastic and glass. Donating spent coffee grounds to individuals and organizations as fertilizer for soil, and donating un-used roasted coffee to shelters around town. And of course, using eco-friendly- and compostable-based products. We’d love to reduce milk waste by donating extra spent milk to bakers around town to produce cheese.

What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?

Sometime in August/September… hopefully

Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?

Yes! We couldn’t have gotten where we are now without these folks and their killer crew! Alex Joganic for our graphics and killer website. Amanda Loper and her rad team over at David Baker Architects, and Kyle Tyree and is wonderful crew over at Locke General Contractors. They’re incredibly professional and the process from start to finish was a breeze!

Thank you!

Thanks! :)
