Sprudge.com co-founder Zachary Carlsen is in Costa Rica this week, along with Cafe Imports and six barista champions. Here’s their first day together in a series of photos, videos, and .gifs.
First, we started our day off right at a little pop-up multi-roaster.
Then we ate a hearty breakfast at Denny’s.
Ordered the “Costa Rican” of course.
Hopped our bus (with trusty driver Alexander) to CiCafe.
We hung out with rad Costa Rican baristas and the Specialty Coffee Association of Costa Rica.
Made new friends.
Raked parchment.
Shoveled organic compost/soil into seedling bags.
Dialed in espresso with Costa Rica baristas.
Signed copies of Barista Magazine (well, Katie Carguilo mostly did that).
Noted that the limes here were very orange.
Caught up on e-mails and updated Instagram when we could find WiFi.
Ate giant platters of squid and ceviche at El Banco De Los Marlscos.
Rocked some red hot Rawlings.
Drove out to Las Lajas in the Central Valley.
Met Doña Francisca Cubillo and her husband Oscar.
Got our noses in some honey and natural coffees.
Planted our faces in honey coffee.
Cupped alternative processed coffees – yellow honey, red honey, black honey, and two different styles of naturals.
Evaluated individual lots with Francisca.
Got weird.
Took a post-cupping siesta.
Waited for the sunset at La Lajas.
Watched the sunset.
