Sugar Shock: Starbucks Seasonal Drinks Are Calorie Bombs!

Starbucks Coffee has introduced a number of popular seasonal offerings over the years, amassing thousands of die-hard fans. Cult classics like the Pumpkin Spice Latte even caused a public Twitter hysteria when distribution centers ran low on the flavoring back in October.

However, the sugar content in some of the newest Starbucks concoctions is nothing short of shocking. These Starbucks drinks layer sweetened whipping cream on top of sugar syrups, cut the whole thing with a shot or two of espresso, and pile it high with various curls, crumbles, and crunches.

Here’s some of the worst offenders this holiday season:

Caramel Brulee Latte (Starbucks)

“Espresso and steamed milk flavored with caramel brulée sauce, topped with sweetened whipped cream and caramel brulée topping.” A grande Caramel Brulee Latte has 52 grams of sugar and a whopping 430 calories. The frappuccino version contains 63 grams of sugar and 410 calories. A venti contains 82 grams of sugar and 510 calories. That’s almost as much sugar as two McDonalds Hot Fudge Sundaes!

Egg nog latte (Starbucks)

“Espresso with steamed eggnog and milk, topped with ground nutmeg.” A grande contains 460 calories and 48 grams of sugar. With an additional 21 grams of fat it packs as much glut as two servings of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream.

Peppermint white chocolate mocha (Starbucks)

“Espresso with white chocolate and peppermint flavored syrups and steamed milk. Topped with sweetened whipped cream and dark chocolate curls.” A grande has 520 calories and 75 grams of sugar. A venti has 94 grams of sugar and 640 calories. That’s like eating five Twinkies (RIP).

Cinnamon Dolce Frappuccino (Starbucks)

“Coffee with cinnamon dolce flavored syrup, blended with milk and ice. Topped with sweetened whipped cream and our cinnamon dolce topping.” A venti contains 78 grams of sugar and 480 calories. That’s about as much as a king size Snickers bar. Sounds pretty dolce to us.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

“Espresso, pumpkin-flavored syrup and steamed milk. Topped with sweetened whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices.” The Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte contains 62 grams of sugar and 470 calories. That’s as many calories as 3 KFC crispy strips, corn on the cob, and a medium Diet Pepsi!

The folks at Starbucks are quick to point out that these drinks are customizable and come in many different (smaller) sizes. We suggest ordering an off-menu short (that’s eight ounces) version of these seasonal drinks. Don’t skimp on the whipped cream, and maybe split it with a friend or loved one this holiday season.
