Your trusty Sprudge.com editors are in caps lock BLISS over Kenya Kangunu, this year’s stand-out African coffee. From deep within the Murang district, on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains, there emerged a fantasy blend of SL-28 and 34, dripping with blackberry, violet honey, and sugar cane. Fantasy soon merged with reality. All of your extended fermentation wet processed dreams just came true.
Chris Tacy just gave it a glowing review over at God Shot. Tacy held two cuppings over the course of two days. Day 1 cuppers were “non-professional coffee fanatics” from Home-Barista.com, and they gave Stumptown’s Kangunu their vote as the #3 favorite (behind Wendelboe’s Esmeralda and COE Cielito). On Day 2, industry professionals cupped the same coffees and Kangunu was the all-around favorite.
Notes on Kangunu:
Stumptown Kenya Kangunu – An incredibly complete coffee. It not only has both of the common Kenya classic flavour profiles – it integrates them. High-end contains lovely clean citrus and cassis acidity and aromatics of black currant, lively berry and lime zest. Middle of the profile is a gorgeous melding of huckleberry compote and cassis syrup and caramelized brown sugar. The low-end is rich with leather and tomato paste and demi-glace. Incredible green coffee, wonderfully roasted. Would be ideal brewed in a Clever brewer or Chemex.
Kangunu was purchased by Stumptown, Four Barrel, Terroir Coffee and Sweet Maria’s. Sweet Maria’s is currently sold out and Terroir doesn’t have it on their offering list. You can still purchase these sweet, sweet beans online through Stumptown and Four Barrel.
