Though perhaps at times a necessity, especially on those redeye flights, coffee on airplanes is really bad. Weโve all had it and weโve never enjoyed it. But have you ever had coffee so bad that the plane had to make an emergency landing? Because thatโs what happened on a recent Southwest Airlines flight.
Sort Of. According to Daily Mail, Southwest Flight 1539 was traveling from Orlando to Houston when it had to make an emergency stop in Pensacola โafter passengers and the crew complained of fumesโ that were found to be coming from the coffee maker.
As a frequent flier myself, I feel confident Iโm able to put myself on that flight to give you a firsthand account of what happened:
Passenger (played by yours truly) in 25B (because Iโm not fancy): Iโll have a coffee please.
Flight attendant: Coming right up.
Passenger: It smells like something is burning.
Flight attendant: I know. You said you wanted coffee. Thatโs what coffee smells like.
Passenger: Whatโs all this smoke then?
Flight attendant: Thatโs uhhhโฆ Iโll be right back.
(EXEUNT FLIGHT ATTENDANT TOWARDS SOURCE OF FUMES)
Passenger: DONโT FORGET MY COFFEE!
And Scene.
But donโt worry, this play doesnโt end in tragedy, unless you think a few hour detour to keep you safe while hurling through the sky at 500mph a tragedy (and given how awful people are on airplanes, you probably do). All passengers and crew were safely deplaned in Pensacola while the cabin was checked. Once all systems were go, the plane successfully made its journey to Houston, where hopefully Southwestโa noted chill airlineโtreated everyone to coffee and a doughnut at Morningstar.
They probably didnโt, but it would be a lot cooler if they did.
