The world record for fastest cup of coffee consumed was held by a German by the name of Andre Ortolf. That is, until it was broken recently. By another German.

As reported by UPI, Ortolf’s world record of 3.17 seconds stood for nearly four years until a new challenger, Felix von Meibom, rose to the occasion. Footage of the record-breaking attempt was shared via the Guinness World Records Instagram. In it, you can see that there is a full mug and that the coffee is in fact hot, though it is unclear how hot and if there is any temperature requirement for the record. Von Meibom makes quick work of the cuppa, smashing it in just 3.12 seconds, .05 seconds faster than the previous record.

It is, admittedly, a pretty silly record, but in no way the silliest of all the Guinness Book coffee records. Thereโ€™s the record for the fastest coffee-powered vehicle and the fastest time to move 10 coffee beans with chopsticks (with both singles and doubles categories). Thereโ€™s the records for the largest coffee bean sentence at 6,088 beansโ€”though I have no idea what that actually means. Thereโ€™s the largest iced coffee, largest cup of coffee, largest Irish coffee, and largest coffee press. Thereโ€™s the largest human image of a coffee pot, the largest coffee cup pyramid, and the largest coffee painting. Thereโ€™s a record for most nationalities at a coffee party. The record for Worldโ€™s Most Expensive Coffee is currently held by a Kopi Luwak that sold for around $300 per pound.

Apropos of nothing, now seems like a good time to remind you that one must pay in order to have their โ€œrecordโ€ recognized by Guinness. That Kopi Luwak, for instance, would have to sell for more than eight times its listed price to have a chance of toppling a Panama Gesha that sold for $2,500 a pound in 2021. Yet, there it is: World’s Most Expensive Coffee. The Guinness Book is really just a record of those willing to pay for recognition. Worldโ€™s Greatest Sum of Money Spent On a Coffee Record.

So before you go getting any fancy ideas about challenging von Meibom for the crownโ€”because honestly, 3.12 seconds doesn’t seem all that insurmountableโ€”just remember, it’s going to cost you. And not just the second-degree burns down your gullet. Real, actual dollars. I for one will be spending my days practicing for records of my own: World’s Most Enjoyed Cup of Coffee, to be consumed at the World’s Most Reasonable Pace.
