Here at Sprudge Maps Spotlight we’re looking for the best possible cafes to feature, from near and far, all over this incredible coffee loving world. You don’t need to be from a big city, or come with a lot of bona fidesโ€”we care more about community and coffee than we do about your address. Now Carbondale, Colorado might not be on everyone’s map just yetโ€”population 6,427โ€”but what they lack in people they make up for with delicious coffee. This is Bonfire Coffee Company.

We spoke digitally with Bonfire Coffee owner Chris Chacos to learn more.

What is the neighborhood like where you’re located? What’s some other cool stuff nearby?

Our cafe is located in downtown Carbondale, a wonderful mountain town about 40 miles from Aspen, CO.

Carbondale is known for its laid-back but progressive residents. There are world-class outdoor activities throughout our valley, from mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, mountaineering, rock climbing, and of course, skiing.

Did you close during a mandated Coronavirus shut-down, and if so, for how long?

Luckily, we never had to close because of the Coronavirus. We have closed our dining room for much of the year.

How has Coronavirus impacted daily work at your cafe?

The Coronavirus has changed everything we do and how we operate. We have transitioned to pick-up counter service for most of the year. We have taken our safety precautions very seriously, and our efforts have paid off by enabling us to stay open.

What’s something cool or unique about your cafe you want folks to know?

We are housed in a historic building with a 100-year-old freight elevator in our cafe, which still operates.

Is there a community organization or charity you’d like to shout-out as part of this feature?

We work with Carbondale Arts, a local artist collective. They managed our artwork at our cafe for years, with rotating artwork from local contributors.

Thank you!
