Introduce yourself to our readers—tell us about your cafe!

We started our ²²Beans Specialty Coffee Shop in 2016 with the goal to make a variety of different specialty grade coffees available to our guests. Back then, we selected our coffees from roasteries all over the world with a focus on Europe. Every week we offered two of different roasts for espresso based drinks, and we offer all coffees on stock as pour-overs.

In 2018 we started our own micro-roastery, the ²²Beans Specialty Coffee Roast Lab, and have steadily been extending the range of coffees to currently ten different varieties sourced from selected producers all over the coffee producing world. Before the pandemic we were able to visit some of the farmers and washing stations in Brazil and Ethiopia with the help of our coffee importer Nordic Approach.

What equipment do you use in your shop?

We are pulling our espresso shots on a two-group La Marzocco Linea PB. Our espresso grinder is a Mahlkönig K30 Twin. For pour-overs we offer Chemex and AeroPress with coffee ground on a Mahlkönig EK43. A Ditting KFA1403 grinds our beans for customers we could not (yet) convince to invest into a home grinder.

Which roaster or roasters do you serve?

We primarily serve an ever-changing selection of our own ²²Beans Specialty Coffees each week. One is a city roast, the other one a light roast for the more adventurous coffee lovers. We still do offer guest roaster’s coffees from time to time, but this depends heavily on our travel plans.

What is the neighborhood like where you’re located? What’s some other cool stuff nearby?

We are located in the central pedestrian area of Wiener Neustadt, 50 km south of Vienna, Austria. In our proximity you will find multiple small artisan shops. Our top two choices are:

Anstalt für Getränke, a craft beer shop offering a small, but carefully selected choice of Austrian and international beers.

Villa Maria just opposite the street from us, run by a family producing olives and olive oil in Crete, Greece. They also import delicious wines as well as cheese, herbs and other produce.

Did you close during a mandated Coronavirus shutdown, and if so, for how long?

Except for a short period of approximately six weeks in 2020 we were able to provide our customers with coffee-to-go and our roasted beans for brewing at home. Currently we are back in business and offer stay in, where you can enjoy your cup of joe with a cookie while sitting inside and having a chat with the barista about coffee, life, the universe, and everything.

How has Coronavirus impacted daily work at your cafe?

Our employees are fully vaccinated, wearing FFP2 masks as required by law in Austria.

What’s something cool or unique about your cafe you want folks to know?

Due to the small batch size of our roaster we are able to offer beans not only in a zero-waste reusable sealed box, but also customized roasts to a roast degree of the customers choice.

Thank you!
