Do gooders stay doing good, and now, they are doing good together. Seattle Coffee Gear, who back in May committed to donating $150,000 to “baristas, cafes, roasters, and coffee techs across the country” affected by COVID-19, have teamed up with Getchusomegear, a non-profit organization by Chris McAuley (profiled on Sprudge here) getting coffee equipment in the hands of marginalized baristas, to provide a total of $50,000 in grants to 10 marginalized business owners in the coffee space.
Per the announcement made via the Getchusomegear Instagram, each grant will consist of $5,000 and are for “business owners who are navigating new ventures and transitioning to newer and bigger things for themselves in coffee.” Recipients of the first five grants, all Black women, have already been been announced and include: 2020 Sprudge Twenty inductee LaNisa Williams (Barista Life LA to open Hustler’s Cup), BiankA AlloyN and SabreeN Naimah (Cute Coffee), Lori Jones (BLACK•OLOGY Coffee Company), Talitha Clemons (Bright Vibe Coffee), and Sprudge Editor at Large Michelle Johnson (The Chocolate Barista).
Spearheaded by McAuley, the second round of grant applications and announcements is set for some time in November. More information will become available on the application process via the Getchusomegear Instagram in the coming weeks. In the meantime, though, Seattle Coffee Gear is in the process of featuring each of the five grant recipients, so head on over to their Instagram page to learn more about the group already announced.
