A new cafe called Maglia Rosa officially opened this weekend in Portland, OR at SW 11th & Stark, inside West End Bikes iosk space briefly occupied last spring by Heart Coffee Roasters. It’s the work of 2005 United States Barista Champion Phuong Tran, owner of Ridgefield, Washington’s Lava Java, a storied little cafe with an outsized place in NW specialty coffee history. Phuong’s resume is pretty gosh darn impressive: Licensed Q-Grader, BGA and SCAA credentialed course instructor, certified USBC Head Judge, and former member of the BGA Executive Council.

Maglia Rosa has a beautiful black La Marzocco Strada MP and two Mazzer Roburs, upon which to serve up single origin espressos roasted by Stumptown Coffee. On her grand opening weekend, Phuong pulled Ethiopia Mordecofe and Colombia Hacienda El Roble. The menu is limited to drinks under eight ounces. Phuong tells Sprudge she’s excited to be serving coffee in Portland, where she hopes to run into friends more often. Maglia Rosa is located atย 1111ย SW Starkย Streetย and open Monday-Friday 10am-7pm and Saturday 10am-6pm.

The phrase maglia rosa means “the pink jersey” and comes from the annual Giro d’Italia bicycle race across Italy, which means it’s pretty much the perfect name for a cafe in a fancy bike shop!
