The World Brewers Cup has long been a showcase for the bleeding edge of manual brewing technologyโ€”which sounds a bit like an oxymoron, I know, but go with me on this oneโ€”and the 2019 edition was no different. The world was introduced to the K90, the brew method designed by US Brewers Cup Champion Kaley Gann of Messenger Coffee. And the biggest splash came from not one but two Finalists using the instantly recognizable Origami Dripper, including the eventual champion, Chinaโ€™s Du Jianing of Uni-Uni Roasters and Bakery.

But these werenโ€™t the only new manual coffee brewers to take the stage at the 2019 World Brewers Cup, and in fact, the Origami Dripper wasnโ€™t the only new brewer in the Finals. 2019 runner-up Patrik Rolf of April Coffee Roasters in Copenhagen, Denmark came equipped with a new manual brewer of his own design, and it’s available on Kickstarter now!

Two years in the making, the April Pour-Over is the newest update on the flat-bottom brewer popularized by the Kalita Wave. And as I asked at my first Passover seder, “how is this flat-bottom brewer different from all other flat-bottom brewers?” To which everyone who respond, “why the fins of course!” Created in collaboration with Belgian design company Serax, the ceramic brewer features three fins (not Danes, surprisingly) inside the device that keeps the filter from coming in contact with the bottom of the brewer, which “allows for a flow rate you canโ€™t get with any other flatbed brewer,” per April. Compatible with Kalita and Kinto flat-bed filters, rings around the interior of the April Pour-Over create air pockets between the brewer and the filter that “help with the air circulation, making sure that each brew is consistent and helps contribute to a ‘cleaner taste experience.’โ€

The matching cup comes with a lid to provide an “optimal aroma experience” as well as helping the coffee maintain a proper drinking temperature.

Already funded on Kickstarter, you can grab your own April Pour-Over for as low as DK 355 ($52 USD), which includes the brewer, cup, saucer, lid, brew guide, and free worldwide shipping. Rewards are expected to be delivered in May 2020. For more information or to order you own April Pour-Over brewer, visit the Kickstarter page.
