Weekly Weekend Week In Review For 9/1/2012

Meet our brand new intern, Joanna Han! Unlike our many other avatars, we assure you, she’s real. Ms. Han will be providing us with weekly recaps of Sprudge content and assorted web ephemera each Saturday through the end of 2012.

Stumptown’s Sparkling New HQ Now Open: The day before Stumptown Coffee Roasters held the grand opening ceremony of its new headquarters last Thursday, Sprudge.com had an exclusive first look at the stunning new space at 100 SE Salmon Street. The more than 37,000-square-feet facility is now home to Stumptown’s roasting, training, green storage, quality control, and offices. Check out photos of the ceremony on Stumptown’s Facebook page.

Back-to-School Brew: Normal college freshmen are shopping for notebooks and binders, when they really ought to be adding Aeropress, electric kettles, and hand grinders to their back-to-school shopping lists. We’ve got a comprehensive guide to the best dorm room coffee setup to determine which brew method is best for you, and a list of some great roasters near your college to make your new life easier. Now get out there and make some bad decisions!

Mike Phillips In The Big Apple: Handsome Coffee Roasters owner and World Barista Champion Mike Phillips recently hit the streets of NYC, where he pulled shots on a Mirage Idrocompresso at Joe, served free iced coffee at a Brooks Brothers shop, and handed out bags of coffee at the Baristas For Boobs charity event (which was a big success!). Sprudge.com caught up with him for a recap interview, which quickly turned into dishy pillow talk.

Best Roast On The Left Coast: Did you know that elevated caffeine levels were recently found in the waters off the Oregon coast? Four other coffee facts from Left Coast Roast, Hanna Neuschwander’s new guide to coffee roasters on the west coast. The book launched last Monday in Portland, and we may have had a nice thing or two to say about it.

Barista Champs In Red Square: If you happen to be in Moscow this weekend – shopping for caviar or whatever – don’t forget to stop by the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival  The week-long festival kicks off today and features some of the best baristas in the world.

Some Loves For Cafe Evoke: Cafe Evoke recently opened up its first brick-and-mortar shop in Edmond, Oklahoma, which we had never heard of before but now know a whole bunch about. Watch the whole build-out process in this speedy video remix, which shows off their genuinely attractive cafe space and a gorgeous custom Swedish flag-colored La Marzocco Linea espresso machine.

Coffee Is The New Cake: We’ve all heard the coffee to wine analogy, but we’ve got one you can really sink your teeth in to: coffee, meet cake. This feature gave birth to a cavalcade of Twitter responses, our favorite coming from @PeterGiuliano: “Ok, so if coffee is like cake, Yirgacheffes are like Lemon Poppyseed with green tea icing.” Delicious.
