Hold on to your butts! The Philadelphia Thursday Night Throwdown is happening tomorrow at the Joe on Rittenhouse Square (1845 Walnut Street). The shindig begins at 7PM and if you want to enter? It’s just $5. For those who have never been to one of Philadelphia’s legendary TNT events, expect brotherly love, local beer from Yards Brewing, epic prizes, and a lot of fun.

This particular event is extra special as the hosts have invited Play On Philly, a group of students that will perform live music. The whole TNT is a big fundraiser for the POP crew and donations are encouraged.

How did our friends and partners at Joe get affiliated with Play On Philly? One of their own Rittenhouse baristas teaches for the organization daily after his opening shifts. More info about the organization came to us from cafe manger Lee Harrison:

Play on Philly (POP) is a program founded two years ago by trumpet player and Curtis Institute grad Stanford Thompson. It is a program tailored after El Sistema which is a highly successful music program for low-income children in Venezula, it has produced some world class musicians, probably the most famous is Gustavo Dudamel (conductor of the LA Orchestra).

POP seeks to enrich the lives of Philadelphia youth by providing daily music instruction in communities which have little access to music education. Currently about 250 students are involved in POP, the program began in West Philly at the St. Francis de Sales School, and then later expanded to Freire Charter Middle School.

Here’s a video of the group from an upcoming documentary:
