A water pipe disaster of catastrophic proportions is currently affecting more than 2 million people in the Boston area. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency Saturday afternoon, and National Guard units are on the ground in Boston dispersing water and emergency supplies. As of Monday, Boston residents are facing at least another 48 hours without clean water, as millions of gallons leak slowly into the brackish Charles River.

Three days after a large water pipe 10 miles west of the city ruptured, cutting off drinking water to 2 million people, cafes and restaurants could not offer their Monday morning patrons the weekโ€™s first cup of joe.โ€œI need coffee, I need it bad, and I canโ€™t find it anywhere,โ€ said Talisa Payne, 21, on her way to work at Macyโ€™s department store.

โ€œI almost cried in Dunkinโ€™ Donuts,โ€ said Antoinette Washington, 42, after being told its coffee pots stood empty. The administrative assistant spoke as she scoured the shelves in a CVS Pharmacy for the instant variety. It was gone, too.

Dunkin Donuts Inc. ordered about 300 stores in the affected area to stop using outside water for ice makers and coffee brewers and told employees not to use tap water to wash their hands, according to an e-mailed statement from Andrew Mastrangelo, a company spokesman.
