La Colombe stuns with this beautiful new packaging. The roasting company’s new look sports a peek-a-boo view of the roasted coffee within a transparent biodegradable bag enclosed in a recyclable cardboard box. A colorful label wraps itself around the box with illustrations depicting each coffee’s provenance. We absolutely love it and wanted to learn more, so we asked Director of Brand Merchandising and Marketing Kathryn O’Connor to tell us everything.

Please describe the look in your own words!

Transparent. Whole. Real. Our new packaging is raw, recyclable, and natural. We took inspiration from nuts, tomatoes, and even boxes of pasta that use windows to give a view into what youโ€™re buying and ultimately consuming. We use a clear, airtight bag of coffee beans, protected in a structured paper box with a window. The box is wrapped in heavy textured card stock and features artwork that tells the origin story of each coffee bean and blend.

What coffee information do you share on the package? What’s the motivation behind that?

We want to provide customers with a true connection to origin. We did this by designing beautiful illustrations that bring you in and invite you to fully experience the spirit of the country. Tasting notes, roast levels, and the story of the bean were also important features that we wanted to highlight on the label.

What type of package is it?

Our coffee boxes are fully recyclable, and our labels are made using wind power and are 30% post-consumer material. Our bags are one-way valve and have a cellulose layer made of wood pulp. This layer breaks down in less than 12 weeks in home composting.

Is the package recyclable?

This packaging increases our transparency while decreasing environmental impact. Earth conscious was the leading factor in developing this new packaging.ย The outer box is fully recyclable and the bag inside is biodegradable. When you pick up one of these boxes, know that in 5-10 years, nearly all of the packaging will be completely reabsorbed into the natural cycle.
