For The Record: What The Hell Is A Flat White Anyway?

Lattes in Australia are served in 7-8oz clear glasses. Cappuccinos are served in ceramic 6oz cups. Flat whites are lattes served in cappuccino cups. The wide mouth of the cappuccino cup gives the impression that there’s less foam than a latte. Tell your friends!

Also, nobody is really sure if it started in New Zealand or Australia, but it seems like a bigger deal to the Kiwis, so it’s probably okay for them to have it.

Next week: the cortado, gibraltar, the long macchiato, and other small lattes with funny names.

Flat Woiuts are for baristas who can pour latte art, but are unable to make a cappuccino.

Go to London, Melbourne, etc and if you order a cappuccino, you’ll gets a flat woiute.

I ASK THIS WHAT IS A FLAT WHITE
    IT SOUNDS CREAMY AND LIGHT
YOU MAKE IT IN A CAPPUCCINO
    CUP OH SOUNDS OBSCENE NO?
WHY WOULD YOU MAKE SUCH A FRIGHT?

An Australian man ordered a flat white from me the other day. I asked him if he wanted a small latte, however he just wanted a large coffee with cream.

I don’t care about names. Give me number of shots, milk volume, temperature and foam requirements. I’ll make you something delicious.

Usually a flat white will have a stronger coffee taste than a latte, and it tends to be up to each individual cafe as to how they achieve this. Some put a double shot in, some just use different sized cups. Usually they will be the same in a take away cup. Every cafe does it differently. More frequently, the cappuccino and the flat white will be largely identical; same cup, same milk, same coffee, even the same foam – the only difference will often be the cappuccino has chocolate sprinkled on top.

It’s up the cafe, everyone has a different idea of what a flat white is. We’re happy with that.

I was with you right up until “…the wide mouth of the cappuccino cup gives the impression that there’s less foam than a latte.” Even if they use a bowl-shaped 6oz cup as opposed to a tulip, how is that wider than the 7-8 oz clear glass a latte is served in? Unless the latte glass is a tall, narrow one, but all pics I’ve ever seen have been of short, wide rocks glasses, similar in proportion to Gibraltars.
