We’re raising funds for the ACLU in solidarity against the current refugee and immigration bans underway in the United States. One of the nations targeted in the immigration ban is Yemen, the ancestral home of coffee that is today home to a fast-growing specialty coffee sector. Mokhtar Alkhanshali is a major international leader for Yemeni coffee through his work withย Port of Mokha, a quality-focused company focused on Yemeni coffee and based in the San Francisco Bay Area. We’ve featured Alkhanshali’s story previously on Sprudge, but as a Yemeni-American dual citizen he’s found himself, his family and his coffee business square in the crosshairs of our wider American moment.
Few loves are more inherently international than a love of coffee, and it’s so important that we listen to the voices of those directly impacted by these immoral and illegal executive orders. As Alkhanshali says in his interview with Sprudge co-founder Jordan Michelman, “The shortest distance between two people is over a cup of coffee.”
