Here’s an excerpt on Mr. Theisen’s approach to roasting:

There’s a couple of notable things in this video, including Mr. Theisen’s Torrefattore electric manual roaster, and the fact that Revel’s kiosk is a drive-thru. We imagine the concept of a specialty coffee drive-thru kiosk is difficult to fathom for some – particularly our European readers – but really, it’s no different than a microcafe or a walk-up counter. Drive-thru coffee has its own (admittedly peculiar) place in western North American coffee culture, owing much to vast distances, freezing low temperatures, and a whole host of weird cultural enjambments. They are the love children of the 1990′s “Frasier” and Starbucks bourgeoisie, frotteured up against this region’s deep blue collar roots.

The drive-thru model has been pretty egregiously abused by low-quality convenience brands and tawdry peep-show marketing gimmicks, but there is absolutely no reason why drive-thrus can’t be home to high quality coffee service, and Mr. Theisen and Revel Coffee are living proof.

Revel Coffee is a fine purveyor of Cafe Imports coffees, and you can learn more about their offerings and place in the world by checking out Revel Coffee online. In addition to the kiosk, Revel Coffee is also available at a variety of locations in Billings, including Cafe DeCamp, Harper & Madison Bakery, and The Lilac, a restaurant specializing in “from scratch, local, responsible cooking.”

The accomplished filmmaker Trevor Fife once again explores the inner workings of Stumptown Coffee Roasters. For years, he has helped us to tell the story of our producers, shedding light on what goes on behind the scenes on the ground at origin. For this project, Trevor turns the camera inward to distill the essence of what it means to be a part of the “Stumptown Family.”

Trevor has been a long-time collaborator with Stumptown: traveling to source with Duane starting in 2006, shooting films on farms like Guatemala Finca El Injerto, and traveling across Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya, blending clean, pristine digital images with gritty and textural Super 8 and 16mm film. His work is not only easy on the eyes but captures the living, breathing spirit behind the coffee farms and the surrounding communities. He’s perhaps best known for the swampy sexy cool True Blood opening sequence shot on Super 8. We feel lucky to work with him and look forward to future collaborations to come.

To promote and help folks train for the USBC, we teamed with up with Barista Guild of America NW Chapter rep Laila Ghambari, a team of certified barista competition judges, and a few choice sponsors to hold a series competition preparedness events. These “PrepFest 2013” events took potential barista competitors, judges, and volunteers on a whirlwind wild ride, all in front of our multiple camera set-up.

Audiences in Portland and Seattle watched as Laila Ghambari (Caffe Ladro) and Sarah Dooley (La Marzocco USA) performed a real-live authentic 15 minute barista competition routine. This was followed by a judges’ calibration like no other, as PrepFest gave the audience carte blanche to ask questions and get answers as sensory and technical judges went through the scores line-by-line. Calibrations are normally extraordinarily private, closed-door affairs; PrepFest blew the doors off that situation, offering a truly unique level of insight into the authentic judging experience.

We coagulated a ton of info from PrepFest and turned it into the Sprudge Pop Video you see above, which was filmed in Portland at the American Barista and Coffee School. Below you can find complete score sheets for each judge.

Every Monday after they finish rehearsing, members of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Oakville Chapter head down to their favorite Tim Hortons and order a cup of coffee and a donut.

Danfi Parker also frequents the same Timmies, and happened to be there during The Entertainers’ weekly visit.

“They had a little whistle thing to set the pitch and then they just started singing,” he told the Toronto Star.

We knew that Tim Hortons was important to the Canadian People, but we had no idea these places doubled as a sort of community bandstand. We do know that you can get a donut for $.49 Canadian cents with purchase of hot beverage at participating Timmies locations. They also publish annual sustainability and responsibility reports for their coffee buying, which is awesome.

But seriously, how cute is that video?

Jerry Seinfeld’s break-out award-winning hit “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee” has been renewed for a second season. The web series will continue with 24 new episodes. New York Times has the scoop:

But the whole idea behind the Internet show, Mr. Seinfeld said, was to try to break into a medium other than TV. The decision to produce 24 new episodes, to be announced Monday, puts Mr. Seinfeld and Sony on the same track as sites like Netflix — which has forthcoming series like “Arrested Development” and “House of Cards” — in testing the waters to see if original, network-quality entertainment can emerge on the Internet.

“It’s kind of a new paradigm that we’re trying to create,” Mr. Seinfeld said in a telephone interview, referring to himself and Sony. “I think we both were craving that little sandbox feeling we had when we started out.”

Now they need to chase the same thing that other creators of original Internet content have been after: profits.

“This next go-round we’re going to have to figure out some sort of revenue stream, so it makes more sense,” Mr. Seinfeld said.

Mr. Seinfeld, if you need some coffee consulting, we might know a few people.

Starring Gerry Leary, the visually impaired owner and roaster of The Unseen Bean, a specialty coffee company in Boulder, Colorado. It’s hard to pick a favorite moment, but Mr. Leary does more market research with his ears in 20 minutes than most cafe owners do in the entire life of their shop. We dare you not to smile while you watch this.
