Breaking News: Fire Claims Home of NYC Baristas
On Wednesday, September 1st 2010, a Brooklyn apartment fire claimed the home of Sam Penix and Sasha King. Sam and Sasha have been working in specialty coffee for years; Sasha is a former barista and barista trainer at Batdorf and Bronson, now currently employed at Cafe Pedlar in Brooklyn, and Sam is co-owner of Everyman Espresso, located in Manhattan’s East Village. We first featured Sam on Sprudge.com back in February, as part of our Rosettas For Relief coverage, highlighting Sam’s efforts to raise thousands of dollars for Haitian disaster relief.
An apartment fire directly beneath their unit decimated Sam and Sasha’s belongings, endangering their lives and the lives of their pets. We can help, and so can you.
DONATE TODAY TO HELP – even the smallest amounts are greatly appreciated. Visit Sam at Everyman and Sasha at Pedlar to express your sympathies, and click the link below to donate to help pay vet bills, replace belongings, and help Sam and Sasha recover in the weeks to come.
**UPDATE: Counter Culture Coffee NYC will throw a Thursday Night Throwdown at their Chelsea training center, with all proceeds to benefit Sam and Sasha. The event will be Thursday, September 16th at 8pm, located at 37 W 26th St. Suite 400. **
We here at Sprudge sincerely thank you.

I don’t think Sasha works at Grumpy. It has been years.
Sasha is at Cafe Pedlar in Brooklyn.
I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your comforting words and support. Your thoughts are much appreciated in this very jarring experience.
Sasha, your left-coast friends have plenty of goodies for you. Give us a call (M has the info) and we’ll hook you up with what we have, and we also have local help there in NYC from some Oly boys who are happy to help a homegirl.
Thanks, for once in my life I am speechless.
Wish you, Sam and Sasha, the best! Keep your head up, it looks like you have great friends!
Why don’t you guys get insurance like everyone else? Idiots.
