Brilliant: Providence Throwdown Flyers

As monthly throwdown events continue to saturate every last corner pocket of the North American coffee milieu, it can at times become hard to tell one event from another. The Fargo Barista Klatch Cow-Pie Bingo and Barista Rodeo? The Tulsa Dust Bowl Rosetta & Kolache Cotillion? Who can keep them all straight?

The folks behind Rhode Island’s own Providence Coffee Society have figured out a couple of great ways to make themselves stand out: They’re sponsored by two great companies, La Marzocco USA and Rhody Fresh (we loooove America’s quirky regional milk companies); they have a monthly traveling prize (the “green jacket”, a la professional golf’s Masters tournament); each monthly event features DJ International Party Starter Zak Drummond (whatever that means); and best of all, their monthly flyers are seriously cool and weird and great. These flyers are the work of Jim Connolly, a machine tech for New Harvest Coffee Roasters, and here’s a look at some of our favorites from the Providence Coffee Society tumblr:

That’s just unbeatable. If the other ones weren’t also really good, we’d stop here. Seriously, Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield with tulip latte pistols. Mind = blown. “The pour of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the over-roasted and the tyranny of evil blends.”

Here we see a shirtless Prince (from the cover of “For You”) scratching records, Elvis and Nixon enjoying a latte, and some sort of pig-man playing electric guitar. How could anyone miss such an event?

That is not one, not two, but three Lionel Richies – one from the cover of his first single, “Truly“, one from the cover of his greatest single, “All Night Long“, and one that looks to be from the “Dancing On The Ceiling” era. Are we to understand that Mr. Richie (who was, by the way, a member of the Commodores) will be both pouring and judging the latte art at this event?

We aren’t sure what’s happening here, but we want to be a part of it, and are also terrified.
